NYC MTA Enhanced Station Initiative
Modernizing lighting across 15+ subway stations with 20+ custom LED fixture products engineered for the harshest underground environments in America.
Aging Infrastructure in America’s Busiest Subway System
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority operates the largest transit system in North America, serving millions of daily riders across 472 stations. Many stations still relied on 1940s-era fluorescent and HID lighting systems that were failing at an accelerating rate — driving up maintenance costs, creating emergency lighting compliance gaps, and degrading passenger safety perception.
The MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative required a lighting partner that could design and manufacture custom fixture solutions for the unique constraints of underground transit: water infiltration, constant vibration from train traffic, corrosive particulate, and 24/7 continuous operation with zero tolerance for downtime.
20+ Custom-Engineered LED Fixtures
Clear-Vu Lighting designed, prototyped, and deployed over 20 unique LED fixture configurations specifically engineered for the MTA’s underground environments. Each fixture was purpose-built for its application — platform, mezzanine, tunnel corridor, emergency egress, and architectural accent — using our MTLx platform as the foundation.
- MTLx fixtures with IP66/IP67 ratings sealed against water jets, submersion, and tunnel wash chemicals
- clearNET wireless mesh monitoring for real-time fault detection across station zones
- DALI 3-step emergency dimming protocol ensuring code-compliant egress lighting at all times
- IK10-rated impact resistance withstanding 20 joules of mechanical impact
- Vibration-resistant design compliant with EN 60068-2-6 for continuous train traffic
- All fixtures manufactured in our 100,000 sq ft Central Islip, NY facility — full BABA/BAA compliance
“Clear-Vu didn’t just swap fixtures — they engineered a complete lighting ecosystem for each station. The custom MTLx configurations and clearNET monitoring have fundamentally changed how we manage underground lighting.”
— Project Stakeholder, MTA Enhanced Station Initiative
Measurable Impact Across Every Station
The LED modernization delivered immediate, measurable improvements across energy consumption, maintenance burden, emergency compliance, and rider safety perception. Each completed station saw results within the first billing cycle.
